The games were played in Danville after a charter bus transporting the Averett softball team caught fire, reportedly shooting a trail of flame 20 feet long Thursday on the way to Shenandoah. No one was hurt, though the 1986 charter bus from Danville-based Bosman Coach Inc. and some of the team's equipment were destroyed in the blaze, which shut down a portion of U.S. 29 in both directions for about 45 minutes.
"Yesterday was supposed to be our senior day at home, our last home game," Shenandoah coach Marlena Kotynski said. "It was sad because we had everything set up. It was sad just for the parents and the seniors, but ... what can you do? That's a freak accident.
"It's obviously not Averett's fault. We just wanted to make sure we could play even if we had to travel down here."
Shenandoah players doused the fifth-year coach, who recorded her 100th career victory in the first game, with a water cooler after the doubleheader sweep.
Averett freshman catcher and former Tunstall High standout Emily Atkinson collected two of her team's four hits in the doubleheader, including the Cougars' lone hit in Game 1.
"Yes, definitely, especially since yesterday," Atkinson said about getting the chance to play a couple of unexpected extra home games. "I'm glad to play at home again so everybody can come watch us play."
Averett (16-14, 7-11) coach Stefanie Clayton said she wished the Cougars could have taken advantage of the home field advantage, even though
Shenandoah (23-8, 12-3) received last at-bats as the official home team.
Averett stranded eight base runners, including five in scoring position, in the two games combined.
"We struggled a little bit all year with leaving runners on base," Clayton said. "We've got to produce a little bit more offensively."
Katie Haskins hurled a one-hitter and earned the victory in the first game for Shenandoah. She struck out eight and walked one in seven innings.
Sandra Dennison took the loss for Averett after striking out seven, walking none and allowing seven hits in six innings. She was charged with two earned runs in the third inning, when the Hornets connected for four singles.
Averett senior and Chatham High graduate Dannielle Emerson picked up the loss in Game 2 after pitching the first two innings. She allowed a pair of unearned runs in the second inning, when Averett committed two fielding errors, but limited the damage by inducing a pop out to right field to end the frame with the bases loaded. Shenandoah scored twice more in the fifth inning before the Cougars scored their lone run on a Hornets fielding error in the sixth.
Brooke Over earned the win by striking out nine, walking two and allowing three hits in seven innings.
Averett concludes its regular season by visiting Randolph College on Tuesday and opens USA South Conference play Thursday in Burlington, N.C.
Shenandoah can clinch the No. 2 seed in the tournament by sweeping a doubleheader with Greensboro College today in Roanoke. That matchup, originally scheduled for earlier this season at Shenandoah, was rained out and the teams are meeting at a neutral location to mitigate Greensboro's travel expenses, Kotynski said.
"We've made a lot of adjustments this year," the dripping wet Hornets coach said, after speaking about the bus fire. "I'm just glad all of them are safe. All my girls are happy they're safe, too, because they looked up the video on (the Internet) and they were like, 'Oh my gosh.'
"They were freaked out, too."
