Apr 24, 2009 (The Evening News and the Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- FLOWE | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Flow International Corp., a company that makes waterjet cutting and surface-preparation equipment, announced expansion plans at its Jeffersonville plant.

The company plans to add nine new jobs -- including engineers, technicians, a designer and a project manager -- this year, boosting the annual payroll by about $500,000. The company will invest more than $2.4 million to make improvements and equip its 56,000-square-feet of manufacturing space at 1635 Production Road, according to a press release from One Southern Indiana, the area's economic development agency.

"We are thrilled to expand Flow International's facilities and talent pool here in Southern Indiana," operations manager Anthony Neeley said in the release. "The area provides an excellent business environment and access to exceptional employees, and we look forward to leveraging our model factory to support the company's growth in the aerospace industry."

The expansion announcement comes just a few days after the Jeffersonville City Council approved tax abatements on $1 million of new equipment cost and $500,000 worth of real estate improvements. With the abatements, the company will be able to phase in property taxes during the next five years.

Jeffersonville Redevelopment Director Gayle Robinson pointed out that the company has been in Jeffersonville for a number of years.

"If they have the opportunity in this economy to create jobs instead of cutting jobs, it behooves all of city government to support it," he said.

"Jeffersonville is happy to support Flow International's decision to grow its Jeffersonville operations," Mayor Tom Galligan said. "As an added benefit, Flow affords us a presence with their clientele -- corporations of such high caliber as Boeing, Airbus and Mitsubishi."

The Indiana Economic Development Corp. also gave the company up to $100,000 in performance-based tax credits and $52,000 in training grants, according to spokeswoman Blair West.

"We appreciate companies like Flow International that are choosing Indiana as the right place to grow operations and make business more efficient," said E. Mitchell Roob Jr., secretary of commerce and chief executive officer of the Indiana Economic Development Corp.

Flow, headquartered in Kent, Wash., employs 97 associates in Jeffersonville. It's been in Jeffersonville since 1995.

The company produces ultra high-pressure waterjet cleaning and abrasive waterjet cutting technology for customers in the industrial manufacturing and commercial markets. Clients include international corporations such as Airbus, Boeing, General Electric and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

Last year, Flow announced a multimillion dollar deal with Airbus. Under the contract, the company will manufacture and install multiple Composite Machining Center abrasive waterjet and routing machine tool systems.

"It is exciting to witness a cutting-edge company like Flow International choose Southern Indiana in expanding its facilities long term," said Michael Dalby, One Southern Indiana president and chief executive officer. "We are proud to support Flow as it builds a tremendous presence in the aerospace industry."
