"In the interest of our employees' health and safety, Caterpillar has notified its employees of a travel restriction for Mexico due to the outbreak of swine flu. Any exception would require approval at the officer level," said a Caterpillar news release.
"The company has implemented appropriate portions of its emergency response plan and its corporate crisis management team is meeting to monitor the latest developments related to this public health issue and to discuss appropriate steps for employees.
"Over the last several days, Caterpillar has been, and will continue to communicate with employees about the best practices that will help individuals reduce their risk for developing influenza," the statement said.
Caterpillar has six manufacturing plants in Mexico along with other facilities, including parts distributions centers and Solar Turbine facilities.
Also Monday, the University of Illinois Extension said the swine flu has already had an impact on U.S. crop markets, including in Illinois, said a University of Illinois Extension marketing specialist.
"In the first trading session following the announcement of incidences of swine flu in Mexico and the United States, corn, soybean, and wheat futures declined sharply," said marketing specialist Darrel Good.
"Market participants reportedly are concerned that the threat of swine flu will reduce pork demand, stimulating further liquidation of hog numbers and resulting in reduced feed demand." Such negative reaction, Good noted, is typical with episodes that create so much uncertainty. "Russia reportedly announced restriction on pork imports from Mexico and selected origins in the United States," he said. "Restrictions by other importers would not be surprising.
"Health experts indicate that swine flu is not transmitted to humans through properly prepared pork," said Good. "The hope is that the initial knee-jerk reaction will be followed by more thoughtful responses."
