"We voted it down; there was not enough interest," said mayor Chris Elliot in a recent phone interview.
Authorizing a city trash provider could have brought in a franchise fee to the city, noted Nancy Thompson, citizen, who volunteered to put out a survey when the topic came up in an October council meeting, she said.
In the March 12 meeting, she gave the results on the then 20 responses of the 80 surveys sent.
Seventeen people will change," Thompson told the March meeting of council. "Two said maybe, and one said, 'I am not interested in the city of Union Valley getting into the trash services. Someone would have to send out bills'."
Since that meeting, four more responded, stating they would change, she said in a recent interview.
Survey respondents said they use providers 616, JAB Disposal, IESI and Nature Calls.
Charges noted by the respondents varied from quarterly payments ranging from $59.65 to $106, to monthly payments ranging from $19.65 to $22. It was noted in the meeting that various provisions affect cost, such as "no building supplies", or "two feet of cubed brush allowed" and whether or not renting of bins is included.
In that meeting, Elliot said, "We don't want to jump into anything," but added that the newly chosen service provider at Royse City, Sanitation Solutions of Paris, may "cut us a good deal," since that provider is giving Royse City some payment benefits.
One concern had been that the city may need to hire someone to take calls should the city authorize a trash provider.
Also discussed in the April meeting was whether the city should have a warning system for emergencies, Elliot said.
City Hall will open with festivities on May 9 with a potluck picnic, the hot dogs and drinks being provided by the city.
"It will be almost totally finished," Elliot said. Volunteers have been working on the building, located right next to the Union Valley Volunteer Fire Department Fire Station.
