BioSolar, Inc. (BSRC) exhibited its BioBacksheet solar cell technology last month at the largest energy exhibition in Korea as reported in Global Solar Technology. During the three-day International Green Energy Expo, organized by EXCO, The Korea Energy News, more than 30,000 visitors from over 17 countries were able to view the company's BioBacksheet at the Daegu Exhibition & Convention Center in Korea.
The company's BioBacksheet protective covering for photovoltaic solar cells replaces expensive and hazardous petroleum-based film with cotton and castor beans, creating a more environmentally-friendly and cost-effective solar panel component expected to be instrumental in driving down the cost per watt of solar power.
"In Korea, the photovoltaic (PV) and renewable energy market is growing at an average rate of about 40% annually and the Korean government continues to push its goal of having 13% of the world market share by 2030," said Dr. David Lee, BioSolar's chairman and CEO. "While our initial focus remains on U.S. PV market penetration, we will branch out overseas once a stabilized production and distribution operation is established. Green Energy Expo 2009 was a logical place for us to showcase our new products as well as generate business leads with Korea and other international markets." Shin Ha, Inc., BioSolar's Korean marketing partner, reported that the BioBacksheet was warmly received by engineers, purchasing agents, and other VIPs of the Korean and other Asian PV manufacturers, who saw the BioBacksheet samples and catalogues, never before shared with the public. A limited quantity of provisional datasheets and preproduction samples were also previewed.
"We were able to successfully demonstrate that functional photovoltaic backsheets can be produced from renewable resources," said Lee. "Our bio-based materials - both individually and in combination - meet or exceed the characteristics of various testing and performance standards for the photovoltaic industry." Designed to replace existing petroleum-based backsheets for silicon (c-Si) photovoltaic solar panels, the first commercially available BioBacksheet is a highly water resistant and high dielectric strength bio-based material combined with cellulosic film. Ongoing expansion of the patent-pending BioBacksheet technology is also expected to accommodate copper-indium-gallium-selenide (CIGS) and cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin-film photovoltaic panels.
About BioSolar, Inc.
