The callback occurred after Gentex notified the Army that screws attaching some helmet chin straps and other parts did not meet contract requirements.
The screws failed ballistics tests at extreme temperatures, an Army statement said.
The recall affects 15,380 Army helmets, 12,000 Air Force helmets and 6,383 that were never issued, the Army reported. Gentex manufactured 297,000 helmets under the contract.
Gentex received the screws from A.J. Hughes Screw Products Co., in Rochester, N.Y., Gentex spokesman Ken Lee said. Efforts to reach A.J. Hughes were unsuccessful.
The recall issue is not related to layoffs this year that have pared Gentex's work force from about 610 to about 470, Mr. Lee said in an e-mail, and most of the substandard helmets could be repaired and reissued.
An Army investigation centers on the screw company, not Gentex, Mr. Lee said.
