In February, adidas hosted a contest to find young athletes to star in an upcoming women's apparel campaign, "Me, Myself." Haley, a freshman at Redlands East Valley High School, learned of the contest while shopping at Sport Chalet in Redlands.
"She just walked into Sport Chalet and saw a billboard about the contest," said Haley's mother, Lynn Billings. "(The experience) has been amazing for her."
"It was an out-of-the-blue thing," Haley said. "I just decided to enter on the spot. I really didn't think I'd win."
The contest gave girls the opportunity to submit a photo of themselves and an explanation of how they are inspired by sports.
"The goal of the "Me, Myself" contest was to encourage women to share their own personal inspirations and fitness successes to help motivate other women," Britt Jorgenson, U.S. brand marketing director for adidas sport performance, said in an e-mail. "All of the submissions moved us, and each winner captures the essence of the 'Me, Myself' campaign in how she celebrates individuality, confidence and motivation in fitness and sport."
Haley said she has loved sports since she was a little girl, so her mother encouraged her to enter.
"I said something along the lines of 'sports inspires me to be a better person and it gives me the opportunity to work with others," Haley
said. "I think being able to work well with others is really important and I love being a part of a team."
Haley was notified in April that she was one of three girls in the country chosen to star in the campaign, alongside Candace Parker , Women's National Basketball Association most valuable player.
"I actually found out on April 1, so I thought it was an April Fools Day joke," Haley said. "I was pretty excited when I realized I had really won."
Haley and her mother were taken to Hollywood Saturday, where they stayed several days at the Roosevelt Hotel as part of Haley's prize. Over the weekend, they met with adidas representatives and toured the city. On Monday, Haley did the photo shoot.
"A driver picked us up from the hotel and we went to the shoot, where she got her hair and makeup done and was given the clothes she'd be wearing," Lynn said.
In the photos, Haley wore a green workout shirt, black workout pants, and tennis shoes.
"The whole thing was very non-stop," Haley said. "There was a lot of movement. They wanted a natural look, so the trainer would show us a movement, and then we would repeat it."
Lynn said the photo shoot was a fun experience for her daughter and they were both impressed with Parker's humility and patience while working with the girls.
Photos were taken of Haley working out, and using equipment including hand weights and an exercise ball. Photos were taken of just Haley and Parker, and shots including the other winners were also taken.
"It was a lot of fun, really exciting, but nerve-wracking at the same time," Haley said of the day.
The "Me, Myself" campaign will feature apparel from adidas' women's training collection, worn by ordinary women and professional athletes. The advertisements will show women engaging in sport or training exercises to display the functionality of the clothing. The campaign is also intended to stress women's individuality and confidence.
In addition to being featured in the campaign, which will launch in stores in this summer, Haley received a $500 gift card to be used wherever she likes. She was also allowed to keep the shoes she wore in the photos.
"I have no idea what I'm going to buy (with the gift card), but I know it will be something big," Haley said. "I want to get something special so I will remember this forever."
Haley said she enjoyed the whole experience and she is excited for the campaign to launch.
"This has been so much fun and such a blessing," Haley said. "I still can't believe I won."
