Rackable Systems Extends Its OmniStor External Storage Series
Do you know when to trade RACK ?
RACK | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Rackable Systems, Inc., a provider of ecological servers and storage products for medium- to large-scale data centers, announced the availability of its expanded OmniStor line of external storage products designed to add performance and storage capacity to any Rackable server.
With expanded choices of hard drive support, system form factors and power supplies, Rackable noted its new OmniStor storage solutions are now also available built-to-order, a benefit previously only available with Rackable's server lines.
The company said the new storage systems provide customers with the highest performance in the industry, which is crucial for a variety of workloads such as database management, video streaming, media and content delivery, and bulk archival projects.
Rackable will now offer three additional OmniStor solutions: the SE2024, SE2124 and SE3116. With choices of 2.5" or 3.5" hard drive support, half-depth or standard-depth form factors and AC, DC or redundant AC power, the new OmniStor storage products deliver superior performance with industry leading densities. Each new model supports SAS and SATA II drives; the 2U offerings also support Solid State Drives (SSDs). Direct-attached via a 12Gb SAS connection from the server, drives can be configured in RAID or JBOD modes from the server's RAID card or HBA. The half-depth SE2024 delivers performance and maximizes density, packing a full 24 drives per U, resulting in 48 hard drives in a 2U rack when mounted back to back. Half-depth OmniStor models (the new SE2024 and the existing SE3016) are available with Eco-Logical AC or DC power supplies with up to 96.5 percent power efficiency*. The new standard-depth SE2124 and SE3116 systems offer compatibility with rear-cabled servers in standard 19" rack environments with twenty-four 2.5" drives and sixteen 3.5" drives, respectively.
"As hard drives continue to grow in size, performance has simply not kept up with capacity," said Deni Connor, founder and principal analyst with Storage Strategies NOW. "The support for much larger numbers of 2.5" hard drives in next-generation storage arrays, especially considering the impact of SSDs, allows many users to reach that critical balance between performance and much-needed density."
"Rackable's product portfolio is greatly enhanced by these new OmniStor storage expansion systems," said Geoffrey Noer, vice president of product management. "In addition to performance, these products are extremely energy efficient, allowing data centers to realize substantial power savings in Internet and cloud computing, High Performance Computing, financial services, oil and gas exploration, and digital media environments to directly impact their bottom lines."
OmniStor's compact form factor, high performance and mass capacity capabilities make it the ideal replacement for existing server-related storage products like the Sun Fire X4500 and X4540, the company noted in a release.
