TDCX | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in coordination with the Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI) is conducting trainings on seaweed processing in Zamboanga Peninsula.

DOST Regional Director Brenda Nazareth-Manzano said the seaweed processing training is in line with DOST?s Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program otherwise known as SET-UP.

Manzano said the training will be held separately starting today until Tuesday at DOST?s regional office in Zamboanga City and from May 14 to 15 in Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte.

She said the training is intended for the seaweed farmers, traders and processors of Zamboanga City and from the towns of Jose Dalman and Rizal in Zamboanga del Norte.

She said seaweed processing is one of priority technology trainings identified by her office this year in support to the seaweed industry.

The Bureau of Statistics (BAS) records showed that Zamboanga Peninsula and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) remain as the country?s major Kappaphycus producer contributing 55 percent of the total harvest in 2005.

There are at least 5,520 farmers cultivating seaweed, three processors and 14 exports and numerous traders in Zamboanga City, according to the BAS.

The Philippines is the world?s leading producer of carrageenan, which has varied uses in food, pharmaceutical and cosmic industries.

In 2006, Philippines produced approximately 1.34 million metric tons of fresh seaweed, mostly of Kappaphycus variety, worth P6.004 billion, at current prices. (PNA)
