In a unanimous vote, the city council granted the money, from the food and beverage fund, for repairs to the Abigail Herr Cabin in Memorial Park.
Four civic organizations were each given $1,000 from a $300,000 food and beverage fund pool set aside by the council last year.
Built in 1832 and moved to the park decades ago, the cabin is one of the iconic locations in Lebanon. It is depicted on the city flag.
Most of the money -- $12,755 -- will be spent to replace the cabin's cedar shake roof, parks director John Messenger said. The work will be done by Tony Green, Lebanon, who will also repair the cabin's cupola.
"It's kind of like a jig-saw puzzle," Messenger said of the roof repairs. Each shingle must be custom fitted. Green told him the work should be finished by Memorial Day, Messenger said.
Another $1,300 is needed to repoint mortar on the cabin's two chimneys, Messenger said. He asked for an additional $1,000 "in case there is a little extra."
Receiving $1,000 grants were the:
n Boone Area Transit System, for general expenses;
n Lebanon Education Foundation, for grants to teachers and scholarships for students;
n Humane Society for Boone County, for support of its various programs, and
n Lebanon Vitalization, Inc., for advertising to attract more visitors to downtown.
