The layoffs, combined with employee furloughs, will affect administrative positions across the company's North American facilities.
Locally, JLG has facilities in McConnellsburg, Shippensburg, Bedford, and Hagerstown, Md.
"As we stated before, the recessionary economy has a negative impact on residential and commercial construction. This continues to impact our access equipment segment, JLG," said Ann Stawski, vice president of marketing for Wisconsin-based Oshkosh Corp., JLG's parent company.
Stawski said the layoffs take effect this week and do not affect production workers.
She did not have current employment numbers at JLG's North American facilities, but the company is Fulton County's largest employer.
JLG manufactures aerial access equipment used in the construction industry.
The company began cutting back production schedules and laying off substantial portions of its North American work force in August in response to tightening credit markets and a drop in new construction.
The company had employed 3,500 in North America and 4,500 worldwide before the layoffs.
According to the recently released second quarter earnings report, Oshkosh's access equipment segment sales decreased 69.4 percent to $249.2 million for the second quarter of fiscal year 2009, compared with the prior year quarter.
Sales reflected substantially lower global demand arising from tight credit markets and recessionary economies, the company said in a news release. European, African and Middle Eastern equipment sales declined about 80 percent while equipment sales elsewhere, including North America, were down about 70 percent, compared with the second quarter of fiscal 2008.
