MERCERSBURG -- James Buchanan softball coach Eric Reed wrote three ideas down prior to the Rockets' District 3 Class AAA play-in game with Eastern York on Friday afternoon.
Focus ... Run ... Run ... Run ... Have Fun.
Amber Knoll and Megan McCracken had plenty of fun circling the bases during James Buchanan's 11-3 victory over the Golden Knights, going a combined 7-for-8 with five runs and a pair of RBIs to set the table.
They also stole six of the nine bases swiped by the Rockets, who earned their first postseason victory since 2004 and have now won eight straight games.
JB will travel to Dallastown on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. to face No. 6 Kennard-Dale (15-4).
"I had nothing on (Eastern York), but I made sure I watched them warm up," Reed said. "I like to run and when I saw the catcher didn't have a strong arm, I wrote down those three words.
"Amber and Megan, that's why they are up there, to be table setters."
Golden Knights coach Brad Rohrbaugh said, "My starting catcher is a first-year player there and the girl we had in there at the end is a freshman. That makes it tough."
Because of construction delays, it took Eastern York 3 hours and 30 minutes to get to Mercersburg. It didn't take James Buchanan nearly that long to dig itself a hole.
Five batters into the game, the Golden Knights had a 2-0 lead and the bases loaded with no outs. Eastern York did so on three walks, a hit batter and an error and it looked like JB was off to a disastrous start.
But Laken Beers worked out of the jam with an infield fly and back-to-back strikeouts. She mowed down the Golden Knights the rest of the way, firing a two-hitter with eight strikeouts.
"I think that was key only giving up two runs," Reed said.
Rohrbaugh said, "We just couldn't push another run across. They have a nice team and our girls didn't come to play today."
McCracken, the catcher, said, "I wasn't too worried. We were just a little rocky in the beginning, but I knew we'd come back when we got our chance to bat."
James Buchanan led 4-3 in the fourth inning when it broke the game open. Paige Estep walked, moved up on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Knoll's single to left field. Knoll stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and came home on McCracken's solid base hit.
The formula repeated itself -- McCracken swiped second, went to third on the overthrow and rolled home on Kaylee Poole's two-out double to make it 7-3.
In all, McCracken was 4-for-4 with four stolen bases and raised her average to .529. It didn't hurt that the Rockets had the leadoff batter on in every inning.
"To start off the lineup, I try to get some hits to give the other girls confidence," McCracken said. "She was a good pitcher and threw a lot of riseballs. After I swung at one or two of them, I laid off and started hitting her."
Then, it was off to the races.
