The vehicle will be released in Japan on Thursday. Powered by a 1. 6-liter engine, the model's fuel efficiency has been improved by 50 per cent from the earlier version. Buyers can take advantage of the tax break for fuel-efficient cars that was introduced last month. The low-end trim line is priced at 1.57 million yen (US$16,330).
Nissan plans to locally assemble and sell the NV200 Vanette in Europe starting this fall and in China as early as next spring. The domestic sales target is 1,300 units a month, and Nissan hopes to sell 150,000 units annually worldwide.
The automaker procures some small commercial vehicles on an OEM basis to help save on development costs. It has received some Vanettes from Mazda Motor Corp. (TSE:7261) since 1994, but it intends to reduce such supplies and shift to in-house development and production as it prepares for worldwide marketing. Nissan will continue to procure from Mazda four-wheel-drive and diesel-powered Vanettes -- versions that will not be available for the new model.
