May 18, 2009 (Close-Up Media via COMTEX) -- MDPA | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Metropolitan Health Networks, Inc. is now offering its Florida customers access to the National Council on Aging's (NCOA) BenefitsCheckUp, a Web-based service to screen for benefits programs.

The service is primarily targeted to seniors with limited income and resources.

The company said that since 2001, more than two million people have used BenefitsCheckUp to find benefits programs that help them pay for prescription drugs, health care, rent, utilities, and other needs. It includes more than 2,000 public and private benefits programs from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. BenefitsCheckUp is now available on the MetCare Web site at metcare.com.

"With an aging U.S. population, and the first of more than 70 million baby boomers turning 60, there is a growing need for resources for older adults," said Stuart Spector, NCOA's Senior Vice President. "The alliance between MetCare and NCOA will help seniors and their caregivers learn everything they need to know about the benefit programs that are available to them."

MetCare recently announced a commitment to begin transforming their medical practices from a traditional care model to a Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) model. The medical home is a model that has drawn national attention as a way to improve patient satisfaction and health care quality, promote prevention, and add value to the customer.

"BenefitsCheckUp will provide our customers, physicians, and associates with very useful community resources to complement their health coverage," said Jose Guethon, MD, MBA, chief operating officer of MetCare of Florida. "Providing a link to community-based resources is just one aspect of care coordination that is a responsibility of a Patient-Centered Medical Home. These resources add value to the health care system."

"Improving the health and well-being of older Americans is key to fulfilling NCOA's mission," said James Firman, president and chief executive officer of the National Council on Aging. "This partnership will make a real difference in the lives of thousands of seniors across the state of Florida."
