FAIRBANKS, May 24, 2009 (Anchorage Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
ZZGEW | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The fact the Dimond girls repeated as state track and field champions on Saturday was no surprise, but their margin of victory sure was.

The Lynx, with four individual victories and a host of point-scorers, tallied 95 points to nearly double the output of their nearest pursuer at the Class 4A meet at Lathrop.

"We didn't think we'd win it by this much," said sophomore Jessica Todd, who claimed the long jump, placed fourth in the 400-meter run and ran the anchor leg of Dimond's second-place 1,600 relay team.

The Bartlett boys seized their second straight team title -- their 14th in school history -- with a nine-point victory over South. The galloping Golden Bears dominated three of the four relays, winning the 400, 800 and 1,600 events.

After a tough week of overcoming strep throat and a disappointing 3,200 on Friday, Trevor Dunbar nearly toppled Doug Herron's 24-year-old record in the 1,600 (4:13.00). Dunbar clocked 4:13.32, missing it by just eight hundredths when Herron's mark is adjusted because it was hand-timed.

The crowd groaned when told of the near-miss, but Dunbar did not lament.

"All in all, I have no regrets," the Kodiak senior said. "I did my best, I charged all the way through the line. I'm just happy to put up (a time) I can be pleased with."

Herron, the former West Valley distance running coach who now volunteers for UAA's track team, watched Saturday and said he was rooting for Dunbar to set a new standard.

"I've been hoping all along that he would get it today," Herron said. "He deserves it. He already ran 4:10."

Dunbar clocked 4:10.78 on May 1 at the Juneau Invitational, but it's not recognized as the official state record because those must be set at the state meet. The same goes for his eye-popping 3,200 run of 8:51.5 on May 8.

Herron would like to see the rule changed so that there are state records as well as state meet records. Herron, along with his longtime friend Marcus Dunbar -- Trevor's father and coach -- has even looked into how that might be done.

"(Trevor) did a great job," Herron said. "He's got the state record."

On the girls side, Dimond sophomore Keiahnna Engel won the 100 and 300 hurdles and said dedication and hard work helped the Lynx excel.

"We just like to win, basically," Engel said after edging Juneau's Emily Sharp in the 300.

Dimond, winner of six state girls championships, repeated for the first time since winning three straight from 1977-79.

Gabby Todd of Bartlett swept the 100, 200 and 400 races to gain the outstanding athlete award. She had to battle to overcome Lieran Flanagan of Kenai in the 400, finishing just one-tenth of a second off the state record in 57.24 seconds.

"This is my last year," Todd said. "I was like, do or die, gotta go for it."

Flanagan, however, led Kenai to a state-record time of 4 minutes, 4.46 seconds in the meet-closing 1,600 relay by erasing a massive deficit on the anchor leg. Dimond led after three legs, but Flanagan reeled in Jessica Todd for the win and a place in history.

"Once I saw that girl in front of me, there was no doubt we had to win," said Flanagan.

The previous record of 4:04.64 was set by Dimond in 1994. Now it belongs to Flanagan, Kristi Louthan, Shaynee DeVito and Bailey Beeson.

Also setting a state record was Service's boys 3,200 relay team (Silas Talbot, Jani Lane, Robert Walgren and Cody Phelps). They clocked 8:02.77 to beat the record (8:03.25) set in 2005 by West Valley.
