Martha Shelton, who helped organize the event, promised fun for the entire family. "We'll have all kinds of events: bingo and checkers for senior citizens, volleyball, basketball," she said. She also said there would be musical chairs for little ones, sack races, tire races and plenty of music.
While the event is free to the public, Shelton said the group will raise money through food. "We're going to sell the food for income," she said. On the menu are hot dogs, hamburgers, soft drinks, water and homemade brownies and desserts.
The Concerned Citizens group holds an event every month and chose a May Day Festival for the fun. "We're going to make it an annual event," said Shelton. "We want everybody to just have a good time."
The festival will be held at the John Lewis Resource Center (the old John Lewis High School building at 860 Spivey St.) All proceeds from food sales and donations will be used towards the renovation of the Center.
