In a statement on its Web site Ormet said it cut output by half a potline from six potlines May 1 and by a further half a potline May 20. This is equivalent to an estimated 44,000 metric tons of a total 265,000 tons a year capacity.
"The company may be required to curtail operations further, and potentially cease operations, if Glencore fails to deliver alumina to the company under the tolling agreement," Ormet said.
The dispute arose when supplies of alumina to Ormet's smelter were disrupted due to the temporary shutdown of alumina refining facilities that supply Glencore. Ormet's smelter produces aluminum sow from Glencore-supplied alumina, and the Swiss firm gets tolling fees.
Glencore has declared force majeure, but Ormet said it is contractually obliged to find other means to supply its raw materials.
Ormet's smelter is located in Hannibal, Ohio. It also operates the 540,000 tons a year Burnside alumina refinery in Louisiana, which is currently idled.
