ABBOTT PARK, Ill., May 29, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- ABT | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The Scientist Magazine Recognizes Abbott as One of the Best Places to Work in Industry

Abbott was recently named one of the Top 10 companies on The Scientist magazine's "Best Places to Work in Industry" list. Abbott was ranked No. 6 on the list of Large Companies (more than 5,000 employees). This is the sixth time that Abbott has been on the list since The Scientist first started ranking companies in 2003. This prestigious list is based on a detailed survey of scientists at life-science companies and research institutions worldwide. The rankings will be included in The Scientist's June issue, available in print and online June 1, 2009.

"Science is the foundation for everything we do at Abbott, and we're proud to be honored by The Scientist for our efforts to provide the resources, tools and development opportunities our scientists need to continue to bring forward new innovations," said John Leonard, M.D., senior vice president, Pharmaceuticals, Research and Development, Abbott.

"The Scientist is delighted to publish this unique and useful study of the life science employers," said Richard Gallagher, editor and publisher, The Scientist. "We can all learn from the winning companies - employees that take great satisfaction from their work are likely to be more motivated and better performers."

Respondents to The Scientist survey were asked to assess their working environment according to 45 criteria in eight different categories, including job satisfaction, benefits, training and integrity. Room for intellectual and career development, a family-friendly environment and less hierarchy topped respondents' priorities. Additionally, employees expressed the importance of job security, stability and growth as desirable attributes of their workplace.

Abbott has numerous recognition programs for scientists, including management recognition programs, patent/inventor awards and induction into the prestigious Volwiler Society, which was established to recognize the company's most distinguished scientists and engineers. Named for the late Ernest H. Volwiler, Ph.D., an internationally recognized scientist and former Abbott president and chairman of the board, the society encourages professional growth, and is meant to spur, recognize and showcase scientific innovation at Abbott. Each year, the Volwiler Society issues "Outstanding Research" awards to the Abbott scientists and teams who have made significant contributions to their scientific fields.

Abbott Widely Recognized as a Great Place to Work

In addition to being recognized as a top employer for scientists, Abbott has been named a great place to work in numerous countries around the world, including Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Korea, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Abbott also has been named one of the "50 Best Places to Launch a Career" by BusinessWeek magazine, one of the Top 10 companies on Working Mother magazine's list of the "100 Best Companies," and one of the top companies for diversity by DiversityInc magazine. Additionally, FORTUNE has named Abbott as one of "America's Most Admired Companies" every year since the list's inception in 1983.
