Kim Wyatt was this year's guest speaker. Wyatt, president of Community National Bank and Trust, spoke about his experiences at Navarro College as a student athlete and his experiences in the banking industry.
The banquet concluded with the naming of the recipients of the Honors Program Excellence Awards. Nancy Graham from Corsicana received both the Academic Excellence and Service Excellence Awards for having the highest grade-point average and the most community service hours. Sarah Springer from Buffalo received the Leadership Excellence Award for her leadership role in a wide variety of student organizations. Courtney Vandiver from Ennis was the emcee for the evening.
The Honors Program, in its second year of existence, was initiated to challenge the top students at Navarro College. To qualify for the program, an entering freshman must have a 3.5 grade-point average, and current college students must have a 3.25 average. Honors courses are taught by select faculty at the college, and only honors students can enroll for these courses.
Students' successful completion of the honors courses are reflected on their transcripts. All three of this year's recipients of the prestigious Graduate Caston Scholarship were in the Honors Program: Crystal Butcher from Corsicana, Lee Ann Kelley from Richland, and Sarah Springer.
Honors students are also required to complete 15 hours of community service each year they are in the program. Student service projects have included working on the Habitat for Humanity houses, Christmas in Action, and the Navarro County Rotary fishing extravaganza for members of the Boys and Girls Clubs. This academic year, the honors students gave more than 1,000 hours to local community service projects. These activities have helped teach these top academic students the importance of giving back to their communities and helping those less fortunate than themselves.
Honors students receive several perks, such as special housing, university tours, and scholarships. Robbye Nesmith, retired Navarro College instructor and counselor, plays an integral part in helping the honors students with their degree plans and making the transition to a university. Several international students have been accepted into the program, and they come from a variety of countries, including Russia, The Gambia, Malaysia, China, and Mexico.
Applications for the fall 2009 Honors Program are now being accepted. Students interested in applying for the Honors Program should contact Dr. Larry Weaver, the dean of arts, sciences, and humanities, at (903) 875-7594, or larry.weaver@navarrocollege.edu.
