Families benefit from retail clubs' donations

Jun 01, 2009 (The Orlando Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- BJ | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Massachusetts-based BJ's Wholesale Club Inc.'s charitable foundation recently distributed grants to local nonprofits that focus on the health and well-being of children and families.

"BJ's Charitable Foundation is proud to maintain our level of giving despite these tough economic times," said Jessica Newman, BJ's manager of community relations.

Locally, the BASE Camp Children's Cancer Foundation in Winter Park received $6,000 for its Food Basket Program, which offers boxes filled with a week's worth of food to families that have a child with cancer or another life-threatening illness.

Orlando Health Foundation in Orlando received $10,000 to fund Healthy Families Orange, an intervention program that works with families to prevent child abuse and neglect.

SafeHouse of Seminole was given $5,000 to purchase diapers, baby cereal and formula, after-school snacks and art supplies for its SafeKid program, for children exposed to domestic violence.

Wachovia employees recently delivered almost 30,000 pounds of food they had collected to the Second Harvest Food Bank in Orlando. Wachovia also made a $10,000 donation to the food bank. ...

Employees from Inwood Consulting Engineers recently participated in Lighthouse Central Florida's 22nd annual Sight and Sole Walk. The team of employees, family, and friends were among more than 325 walkers who attended the event. Inwood placed first in the Corporate Team category, contributing to the grand total of nearly $42,000 raised at the event. ...

In Balance Yoga & Pilates in Lake Mary recently hosted a Gold Swap party, during which participants could receive money for broken and unwanted gold. In Balance donated $500 to SafeHouse of Seminole from the proceeds of the party. ...

Cotter-Ryan Commercial LLC recently donated its services to renovate the High Tech Tutoring Center in Orlando. The renovation project was also sponsored by the Orlando Magic and Kia of Orlando.

Walt Disney World's

Helping Kids Shine grants, a program the region's largest employer has underwritten since 1972, put $700,000 in the hands of 34 charities this month.

The total amount awarded by the company has remained steady since 2006 despite the slumping economy.

This year's grants focused on children in the areas of connecting with adults, constructive use of free time, character development, and compassion. Recipients were chosen by a panel of judges consisting of community leaders and Disney World employees.

The top award of $60,000 went to the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida for the second year in a row, to support its child-development program that works to instill values such as trust, honesty, integrity, responsibility, personal power and self-esteem.

Other awards included $50,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Florida; $48,000 to Bridges of Light Foundation; $40,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida; $39,000 to Harbor House of Central Florida; $35,000 to the Hope CommUnity Center in Apopka; $30,000 to the Foster Grandparent Program of Central Florida; $25,700 to New Hope for Kids; and $25,000 each to the Apopka Family Learning Center and the Florida Citrus Sports Foundation.
