Kanjorski Calls Hearing to Assess the Current State of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac
Washington, DC - Congressman Paul E. Kanjorski (D-PA), Chairman of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Capital Markets, Insurance, and Government Sponsored Enterprises, today announced that the Subcommittee will hold a hearing to examine the current state of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and assess the options and principles for the structure of government-sponsored enterprises in the future.
"Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are extremely important institutions in our nation's housing finance system," said Chairman Kanjorski. "As I have said in the past, Congress must closely monitor Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac while they are under conservatorship. We must ensure that taxpayer money is being spent in the most effective manner, and by doing so, we will protect homeowners, homebuyers, taxpayers, and other regulated financial institutions. In addition to this necessary oversight, it is also important for Congress to begin the long-term debate on how Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will be structured going forward, after we stabilize the economy. Our hearing will therefore examine both of these matters."
