Pakistans declining trend of exports to Japan need to be analyzed

Karachi, May 30, 2009 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) -- TYHOF | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Japans Consul General in Karachi, Akinori Wada told members of SITE Association of Industry Saturday that during last five decades Japan continued to be one of major trade partner of Pakistan. Major sectors of joint venture projects are automobiles; include motorcycle, related sectors, leasing, investment bank, power projects. Mitsubishi Heavy Industry, Toyota Tsusho Corporation shown interest to set up power plants in Pakistan under new energy policy, he said.

Wada said his Government did not take much interest probably due to frequent change of governments in Pakistan in past in apprehension of inconsistency in continuation of policies. On trade imbalance, he said figures depicted in record is incorrect. Pakistans exports are over $139.43 million in 2007-08. As new venues, sectors are opening Pakistani businessmen can avail these to expand business with Japan.

Engr. M A Jabbar said Karachi remained hub of industrial activities but showing downward trend of share in Federal Taxes coming to 50% of federal revenue after shifting of industries due to law & order deterioration. Karachi is being de-rated for investment due to disturbances in last one year. 100000 workers lost jobs due to power outages compounded by forced holidays.

Wada said Japan considers Pakistan important country and spoke of donors meeting recently in Tokyo in which Japan pledged $1 billion to help disturbed economy of Pakistan. Trade between both countries is 3.6 times more from Japan as of last year.

Imports from Japan declined by over 20% since 2005, exports rose by 30% in same period. He called for analytical review of this trend. We consider Pakistan potential country of 170 million people and increased investment by $130 million. A meeting in Tokyo of Pakistani, Japanese businessmen dialogue gave important reports to both governments.
