Deutsche Telekom to replace VoIP ban with surcharge
DT | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Deutsche Telekom (NYSE:DT), a German telecoms operator, said on Tuesday
(2 June) it will end its ban on using Voice over Internet Protocol
(VoIP) applications within its German mobile network but said it will
require customers to pay a surcharge for the service.
The company said that its T-Mobile customers in Germany who want to use
VoIP services such as Skype, an Internet phone service owned by eBay
Inc, have to pay a surcharge starting at EUR9.95 a month.
Deutsche Telekom has to make 'significant investment' in its networks
and the number of available Internet protocol (IP) addressees to offer
its customers the option to use VoIP within its mobile network in
Germany, the company said.
At the moment, using Skype or other VoIP applications on smartphones
such as Apple's iPhone, the G1 Google phone or with handsets with
Microsoft's Windows Mobile software is a breach of contract for
T-Mobile users in Germany.
