On the opening day of the show, better known as E3, the Sony Corp. (TSE:6758) video game unit demonstrated its motion controller system for its PlayStation 3 console. A special controller is used in combination with a digital camera to track the player's movements. This makes it possible for an in-game character to wield a sword realistically based on the player's own actions, for example. The day before, Microsoft unveiled its own motion-sensing system for its Xbox 360 console. This system requires no controllers at all because its digital camera captures the player's body movements directly. Meanwhile, Nintendo announced at E3 a new product featuring more accurate motion sensing for its Wii console. This product is to launch in June, while SCE's motion controller system is due out as early as next spring. Microsoft has yet to announce when it intends to launch its system. With global video game demand projected to decline in 2009, a variety of hardware and software taking advantage of motion-sensing technology will likely be released toward next year in hopes of revitalizing the market.
