Security guards escorted unionized employees from the maintenance and cleaning staffs out of the building, now known as the Corporate Center, about 5 p.m., after it was sold to Matrix Realty Group of Smithtown, Long Island, according to Dennis Rafferty, a member of Local 30 of the Operating Engineers union.
Also losing their jobs were employees from the Service Employees Union, Local 32BJ, Rafferty said.
The building, located near Exit 1 off Interstate 84, had been under contract for sale for several months, and union representatives had tried unsuccessfully to contact Glen Nelson, owner of Matrix Realty, to discuss the future of their jobs.
"I guess he wanted nothing to do with unions," Rafferty said.
State Rep. Jason Bartlett, D-Bethel, called the action "disgraceful."
"In this economic environment, to escort people off the premises who've been working there for 20 years or more is a shame," he said. "With unions all over the state willing to sit down and make concessions, not to give them the opportunity to talk shows a total lack of respect for working people and union people."
Rafferty said the fired employees are planning to picket at both entrances to the building starting at 7 a.m. Thursday, and they plan to remain until someone talks to them.
