Why? Because these ladies are old enough to do anything they want.
"We've already raised our children, had our careers, and now we're over 50 and it's time for us," said Bettye Barnes, 72, of Knoxville, one of about 280 ladies who were all over downtown Thursday, flaunting their glamour as members of the Red Hat Society.
"We do this every year," said Evelyn Miller, 69, also of Knoxville, "shop, eat and drink wine."
The Red Hat Society is a national organization that boasts a million members; a gaggle of red-hatters comes here every year for Red Hat Day at Barter Theatre, which celebrates these ladies who believe enthusiastically in having fun.
"They party hearty," said Nadean Johnson, 66, one of several vendors selling the organization's signature purple and red attire on the Barter Green. "I've seen these ladies who couldn't get up, couldn't hardly walk, they start the 50s band and they get up and they try to move. They get young."
Why red and purple? "Because it just doesn't go," said Hannah McDaniel, 69, of Knoxville. "But we've found that it does."
And as for the glitz and the bling?
"In red hat societies, the ladies get to play dress-up," said Sharon Benfield, 42, another vendor who was selling the eye-catching hats, clothing, feathers, jewelry and accessories that make red-hatters stand out on the sidewalk.
"It gives you a chance to go out and just have fun and forget your troubles for a few hours and just enjoy yourself and being with your friends," said Shirley Pruett, 69, of Hudson, N.C.
Jayne Duehring, of Barter Theatre, said about 280 women turned out at the theater Thursday afternoon -- and they also spent considerable time shopping downtown.
"It's a spectacle," she said. "They're a lot of fun, they come to have a good time ... and they're a lot of fun."
