At Harding Elementary on Detroit's far Northwest side, each of the 14 coaches on the trip visited a classroom for 30 minutes to talk with students in kindergarten through fifth grade. In the second part of the visit, students and teachers were treated to a pep rally featuring all of the coaches and the Sparty mascot.
Teresa Gueyser, acting superintendent of Detroit Public Schools, was present for the event.
"With all of the coaches there, Michigan State probably means a little bit more to them right now," said hockey coach Rick Comley in an MSU release. "They all had their pom-poms in the gym chanting, 'Go green, go white.' Most places we go it's either Tom Izzo or Mark Dantonio that are the king of the hill, but in this case it was Sparty."
After leaving Detroit, the coaches' bus went to Providence Park Hospital in Novi, near Rock Financial Showplace. More than 400 fans attended the 2-hour tailgate-style event at the showplace.
