The number of demat accounts on National Securities Depository Ltd (NSDL) went up to 91.42 lakh as of March from 79.78 lakh same period last year.
In the subsequent months of April and May, there was further addition of 89,000 new accounts.
Similarly, on the rival Central Depository Services Ltd (CDSL), the number of demat accounts increased to 54.28 lakh as of March from 44.63 lakh in the same period year ago.
While in the first two months of the current financial year, another 94,000 accounts have been opened.
The number of demat accounts on both the depositories put together stood at 147.53 lakh as of May.
NSDL, however, is still way ahead of CDSL with total number of active accounts at 92.31 lakh as of May, while CDSL had 55.22 lakh active accounts.
Active accounts are those where the account holder has provided the PAN card details.
