Apple and Hanwang Technology both have made no comment on the saying yet.
Nasdaq-listed Apple submitted an application for the registration of the IPHONE trademark to the Chinese Trademark Office of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce in October 2002. However, it just applied to use the trademark for computer software and computer hardware.
On May 20, 2004, Hanwang Technology applied to register the i-phone trademark for mobile phones and video phones. Being approved by the Chinese regulator, the exclusive right of the trademark was effective in October 2006.
Thus, the popular iPhone needs to change name or seek permission of Hanwang Technology, if it wants to make inroads into the Chinese market.
