The firm is said to procure panels primarily from three suppliers: South Korea's LG Display Co. (KSE:034220) and Taiwanese companies Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp. (TAIEX:3009) and Chunghwa Picture Tubes Ltd (TAIEX:2475). This summer, it will add another South Korean firm and a domestic panel producer.
Funai has been sourcing 80 per cent of its panels from Chi Mei Optoelectronics, but expects to reduce the ratio to around 50 per cent.
With a focus on the key North American market, the Japanese company is targeting a 55 per cent jump in LCD TV sales to 5.4 million units this fiscal year. It has decided to add more suppliers to reduce the risk of supply bottlenecks and other problems that could hinder stable procurement.
In addition, Funai has broadened its lineup to include more screen sizes and price ranges. The additional suppliers will provide the company with greater flexibility in procuring panels suited for its product designs.
