Brad Myers, acting fire chief at the Kokomo Fire Department, said fire crews were first called about 2:30 a.m. by a passer-by who noticed flames shooting from a building on the far south side of the Haynes complex on West Defenbaugh Street.
Myers said the fire erupted in a large compressor room in Building 55.
Fire crews extinguished the blaze after disconnecting power to the building. The fire was contained to the building and equipment inside, Myers said.
No workers or firefighters were injured.
Jean Neel, vice president of corporate affairs at Haynes, said there were workers in the area, but no one was in the room where the compressor caught fire. She added the fire is still under investigation.
"We're still looking into it," she said. "It was an old, large compressor. It was a very minor disruption, and we already have another compressor we're installing."
