Larry Stine, financial secretary for the United Auto Workers Local 2096, previously said 66 union members were to be laid off. Friday was the last day for some, and June 19 will be the last day for the others.
About 400 workers have been laid off since the fall, and officials have no word on when anyone would be recalled, Stine said.
Caterpillar officials could not be reached for comment Friday.
Stine previously said laid-off full-time employees will be eligible for a sub-pay stipend of $100 a week for more than 20 weeks. Workers also would be eligible to apply for unemployment benefits.
UAW Local 2096 President John Bogucki said he expected three-fourths of the 66 members to be laid off on Friday while the remainder would train others on how to do their jobs.
Pontiac Mayor Bob Russell said Friday he was saddened to hear about the layoffs, but he remains hopeful for the workers as the economy is "getting better by the day."
"We are in hopes that those employees would be called back in soon when the economy picks back up again," Russell said.
An informational rally for recently laid-off workers will be at 6 p.m. June 20 across from the Caterpillar facility on 4-H Park Road in Pontiac. The rally is sponsored by UAW Local 2096 and UAW Local 2488, which represents former employees of Interlake Material Handling Inc. in Pontiac.
The rally will give workers information about employment opportunities, officials said.
