MINNEAPOLIS, Jun 15, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- GIS | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- IDG's Computerworld magazine today named General Mills as the best place to work in information technology (IT) in the United States. General Mills has made the annual Computerworld Best Places to Work in IT list for 11 years, advancing to the No. 1 spot from No. 3 in 2008.

"We're extremely proud to be recognized by Computerworld as the best place to work in information technology in the United States," said Mike Martiny, vice president of Information Systems for General Mills. "This honor recognizes our outstanding employees and our strong employee development culture. Our commitment to continuous improvement includes individualized mentoring and development plans that lead to broad experiences, an IT industry certifications program, employee-led affinity groups, and high levels of community involvement. We strongly believe that a great workplace culture is essential for attracting and retaining the best talent in order to drive top tier performance."

Computerworld cited the company's successful recruiting strategy, great benefits, and varied work experiences in a feature article on the company that appears in the June 15 issue of the magazine and online at www.computerworld.com.

Since 1994, Computerworld's annual Best Places to Work in IT feature has ranked the top 100 work environments for technology professionals, based on a comprehensive survey regarding company offerings in categories such as benefits, diversity, career development, training and retention. This year Computerworld surveyed more than 27,000 IT workers for the list, and their responses factored heavily in determining the ratings.

"To be among the Best Places to Work in IT, it's not enough just to seek out and hire the most talented IT people, offer them competitive pay and provide great benefits," said Scot Finnie, editor in chief of Computerworld. "The organizations that made this year's Best Places to Work list sustain a dynamic work environment in which IT professionals keep their hands on the latest technologies and work on projects that are business critical. In the months and years ahead, IT is going to become a key accelerator of business growth."
