Westly Rosario, NIFTDC chief and interim executive director of the National Fisheries Research Development Institute (NFRDI), said the research is long overdue as the Philippines is yet sourcing out its vannamei SPS from Hawaii.
Vannamei is a white shrimp found to be more resistant to diseases than the indigenous Tiger Prawn, that is why it is being recommended to be raised throughout the country.
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has accredited hatcheries in Luzon to produce vannamei fry but these are still sourcing their breeders from Hawaii.
Rosario said if the experiment is successful, the country will no longer import breeder vannamei from Hawaii which will be a boon to shrimp raisers, thus the cost of shrimp fry will considerably decrease.
Production of SPS vannamei will depend on the success of a project called Water Change Technology at the NIFTDC in Dagupan which is now being developed as a model research facility that will produce SPS vannamei breeders. p>In this experiment, we are showing to the people on the need to install plastic lining and water filter, things that must be put up to ensure successful production of SPS breeders.
The SPS brood stocks imported from Hawaii some three years ago had been delicately handled as soon as they had arrived in Manila to ensure that they are really pathogen-free.
