WASHINGTON, DC, Jun 22, 2009 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- SYMC | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The Center for Applied Identity Management Research (CAIMR) today announced that Symantec Corp., the global leader in providing security, storage and systems management solutions, has joined the organization at the Partner level. Laura Garcia-Manrique, Symantec's Vice President, Consumer Online Services, will serve on CAIMR's Board of Directors, providing valuable insight into the organization's future identity management research initiatives.

Launched in October 2008, CAIMR is a trusted public-private partnership of cross-disciplinary experts focused on conducting applied research that addresses current and future identity management challenges in order to provide real-world solutions. Those societal challenges include cyber crime, identity theft and fraud, attacks on critical infrastructure systems, data breaches, financial crimes and more, that impact individuals, public safety, commerce, government and national security. CAIMR will identify these key identity management challenges and the existing gaps in knowledge surrounding them in order to provide the much-needed applied research to properly address them.

"Symantec's technology leadership and dedication to providing the industry's most innovative security solutions will greatly benefit the work CAIMR is undertaking to solve difficult societal challenges associated with identity management," said Dr. Gary R. Gordon, Executive Director of CAIMR. "We are particularly pleased that Laura, with her experience in online consumer security and identity management, will play a pivotal role in building out the initial focal areas of our research and help strengthen our membership base."

At the Partner level, Symantec will participate in CAIMR's research planning committees and workshop meetings, and provide peer reviews of the organization's research reports and publications. Garcia-Manrique is a member of CAIMR's Research Planning Committee which is charged with defining the organization's research agenda, prioritizing research projects, identifying sources of data, and assisting in procuring funding for projects.

"As individuals increasingly depend on their personal and work interactions online, establishing trust on the Internet is essential," said Garcia-Manrique. "We chose to partner with CAIMR because we believe its unique, cross-disciplined approach of combining industry, academia and government to address critical identity management issues will help to accelerate real change."

Garcia-Manrique has more than 13 years' experience in online consumer technology and security. She currently heads the Consumer Online Services team for the Consumer Business Unit at Symantec, building both new online services and the next generation of cloud-based security solutions. Over the course of her career at Symantec, she has been instrumental in the introduction of many new products to the consumer market, including Norton Internet Security, the first Internet security solution designed specifically for the home user. Most recently, she launched OnlineFamily.Norton, a modern family safety solution built on the principles of open communication and designed to provide unique insight into children's online lives in a way not previously supported by other products.

Other CAIMR membership levels include Associate and Alliance Partners. For more information on joining CAIMR, please visit: http://caimr.indiana.edu/contact.html.
