Shapira, chairman, president and CEO of Giant Eagle, Inc., was chairman of the board and its Executive Committee since 2003. A life trustee of the university, Shapira will remain a member of the board's Executive and Compensation committees. He was elected to the board in 1983.

"I thank David for his vision, leadership and inspiration. He's been an outstanding chairman of the board," said Carnegie Mellon President Jared L. Cohon. "I'm confident Ray will be an excellent successor. He's been a devoted, enthusiastic friend of this university for many years and I look forward to working with Ray in his new leadership role."

At KPCB, a prestigious global venture capital firm, Lane has sponsored several investments in the renewable energy and computer technology fields. KPCB focuses on helping entrepreneurs with technological and market insight, organizational development, team building, selling and managing growth.

Before joining KPCB, he was president and chief operating officer of the Oracle Corporation, the second largest software company in the world and the leading enterprise software and services company. During his eight-year tenure, Oracle's revenue grew from $1 billion in 1992 to more than $10 billion.

Lane and his wife, Stephanie, have established the Ray and Stephanie Lane Center for Computational Biology at Carnegie Mellon and have endowed a professorship in the field. One of the missions of the center is to develop computational methods to improve cancer detection, diagnosis and treatment. The Lanes also have endowed a distinguished professorship in mechanical engineering in memory of Ray's father, a graduate of Carnegie Mellon. Nadine Aubry, head of the Mechanical Engineering Department, received the professorship earlier this year.

To fulfill his duties as chairman of the board, Lane, a life trustee who was elected to the board in 1994, will step down as chair of the Campaign Executive Committee. He will be succeeded by Edward Frank, who earned his Ph.D. in computer science from Carnegie Mellon in 1985.

"Inspire Innovation: The Campaign for Carnegie Mellon University," a $1 billion comprehensive effort aimed at building the university's endowment, supporting faculty, students and innovative research, and enhancing the physical campus, began in 2003. Under Lane's leadership, the campaign has raised $577 million in cash and commitments as of May 31, 2009.

Frank, vice president of Apple, Inc., is a life trustee who was elected to the board in 2000. He is also a member of the board's Advancement, Research and Technology Commercialization, Executive and Nominating committees.

In other moves, Sunil Wadhwani, chairman and co-founder of iGate Corporation, will relinquish his vice chairmanship in order to become chair of the Advancement Committee. He will remain a member of the Executive, Investment, and Research and Technology Commercialization committees. He earned his MBA from the Tepper School in 1976. David M. Kirr will succeed Wadhwani as vice chair of the board, joining E. Kears Pollock in that role. Kirr, partner of Kirr, Marbach & Company, is a life trustee who was elected to the board in 1993. He is a 1959 graduate of Carnegie Mellon's College of Engineering and earned his MBA from the Tepper School of Business in 1962. He also is a member of the board's Advancement, Investment and Nominating committees. Pollock, a 1962 graduate of the College of Engineering, is a life trustee who was elected to the board in 1997. He also is a member of the Educational Affairs and Enrollment Committee.

In addition, four new members were elected to the board, Evan Frazier, Roy Haley, Oscar Harris and Rohet Tolani. Frazier, who earned a master's degree in public management from Carnegie Mellon's H. John Heinz III College in 1996, is president and CEO of the Hill House Association, a comprehensive community service organization in Pittsburgh. Haley is chief executive officer and chairman of the board of WESCO International, whose primary operating entity is WESCO Distribution, a leading distributor of electrical construction products and electrical and industrial maintenance, repair and operating supplies, and one of the nation's largest providers of integrated supply services. Harris, a 1971 graduate of Carnegie Mellon's School of Architecture, is founder and chairman of Turner Associates Architects and Planners, Inc. in Atlanta. Tolani, who earned his master's degree at Carnegie Mellon's Tepper School of Business in 1977, is vice chairman of the Tolani Group, a Mumbai-based shipping company with a strong commitment to higher education. Tolani recently established the Rohet Tolani Distinguished Professorship in International Business at the Tepper School. The professorship was awarded to Marketing Professor Kannan Srinivasan.

The moves were approved at the May 18 board meeting.
