SCYL | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Overcast skies and drizzle with a sprinkle of thunderstorms aren't the mix of weather Russ Jacobs was hoping for to kick off the season at Green Valley Swimming Pool & Sports Club.

The private West Manchester Township club needs sunny, warm weather so its members can take full advantage of club offerings that include three pools, batting cages, tennis courts and other features.

But it hasn't worked out that way so far this year. Jacobs said he hasn't seen such consistently poor weather at the beginning of the club's season since he and his wife bought it 17 years ago. It opened the Saturday before Memorial Day.

"We're taking it in the chin," he said. "Our employees aren't getting hours. Customers aren't getting an opportunity to use their membership. It's a lose-lose for everybody."

Dreary June: York County is in the midst of a dreary June. High temperatures have been significantly below normal, according to the National Weather Service in State College. Rainfall is about average, but an unusual weather pattern has meant more cloud cover and drizzly conditions.

"We are seeing what seems to be very much a springtime pattern coming through," said meteorologist Aaron Tyburski.

York County this time of year normally benefits from high pressure that would push many storm fronts farther to the north, Tyburski said. Rainfall would come down from storm fronts that would quickly give way to clearer skies.

Instead, the high pressure so far this year

has stayed farther west, around Texas and other Gulf Coast states. In York County that's meant more cloud cover, which drags down high temperatures by blocking sunlight.

The average high so far this month is about 77 degrees when it would historically be about 81, according to Weather Service statistics.

More rain: When the weather pattern will return to normal is unclear. The National Weather Service is forecasting the possibility of rain on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday this week.

Temperatures are expected to hover in the low to mid-80s this week before climbing closer to 90 degrees on Friday.

Another pool owner, Kenton Jacobs, and his wife bought Lincolnway Swimming Pool and Sports Club in West Manchester Township from his parents five years ago. The club offers two swimming pools, pavilions, tennis, basketball and other features.

He said the weather this summer has been the worst under his ownership.

Sunny weather is critical for people to visit the club, he said. Parents often don't want to sit poolside watching their children on cloudy days.

"We haven't had enough sun, plain and simple," he said.
