The Mill Valley zoning administrator on Wednesday will review a series of storefront renovations that would give an open "farmers market" feel to the incoming store at 731 E. Blithedale Ave. Whole Foods also has a store at 414 Miller Ave.
The city is also in the early review phase of interior plans for the 23,200-square-foot anchor space at the Alto Shopping Center, vacated by Albertsons more than two years ago.
Renovations include adding a brick facade and large roll-up doors for an entryway.
Adam Smith, senior store design coordinator for Whole Foods Markets, said such changes "to give it more of an indoor-outdoor market feel" were incorporated from a series of community meetings on the project last year.
Construction could begin as soon as the city signs off on building permits filed early last month, Smith said. Officials are targeting a store opening in early 2010.
The store's arrival appeared to be in doubt last year as the space remained untouched, paperwork had yet to be filed and work by a Burlingame architecture firm was halted. Adding to community concerns were sluggish sales reports late last year. The downturn brought forth only lukewarm commitment to the site from Whole Foods officials, prior to the company's stepped-up community outreach.
"The shopping center tenants providing local-serving business to the
Mill Valley community have suffered for quite some time with this large storefront being vacant," said Danielle Staude, senior planner with Mill Valley. "The city has been working with Whole Foods for the past several months on their submittal, and we are happy that a meeting date has been set to allow Whole Foods to move through the approval process and hopefully start renovations to the building as soon as possible."
Smith said no plans are in the works for the Miller Avenue store, which was renovated two years ago.
"We were just signing the lease for the new store at that time and took that into account when we were doing plans for the (Miller Avenue) store," he said.
