The Meeker School District announced today that ExxonMobil has made two multiple-year grants to improve math and science education and teacher training. The combined grants provide $590,000 to support facilities expansion, staffing, equipment and professional training programs designed to deliver advanced math and science learning opportunities primarily for students at the new Meeker elementary school, currently under construction.
A five-year $350,000 grant was awarded to the Meeker School District to provide support in three key areas:
-- Facilities. Build out and purchase equipment and materials for a state-of-the-art math and science laboratory in the new Meeker elementary school.
-- Staff. Provide assistance to fund the District's first-ever Math and Science Coach-Coordinator who will serve as a school-wide resource.
-- Equipment. Provide an interactive whiteboard system for each elementary school classroom as well as for math and science classrooms in the District's middle and high school.
"The Meeker School District is honored to accept ExxonMobil's contribution," Meeker Superintendent Dan Evig commented. "This funding will make the District's new elementary school a model for math and science education in the region."
A three-year $240,000 grant will provide funding to the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Colorado School of Mines to develop a collaboration to improve K-5 mathematics and science in the Meeker School District. As part of the program, elementary school faculty will attend summer workshops at the Colorado School of Mines and receive online educational support and training throughout the academic year. The grant will also support infrastructure for an interactive link to allow Meeker teachers access to the Colorado School of Mines facilities.
"ExxonMobil is pleased to make these grants to the Meeker School District and the Colorado School of Mines," noted James F. Branch, Piceance Project Executive, ExxonMobil Production Company. "We strongly believe in investing in the communities in which we operate and improving math and science education is a signature part of ExxonMobil's community involvement program."
Superintendent Dan Evig also stated that ExxonMobil has supported various initiatives to improve math and science education in the Meeker School District over the past three years.
