Toray, the world's largest producer of carbon fiber, will partner with Singapore's state-run Nanyang Technological University, which will also be the home of the research center, specializing in membrane-based water treatment technologies.
The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding earlier in the day for the purpose. The center will launch research activities in September with about five staffers, with the number expected to be increased to over 30 within the next five years.
It will be Toray's second such research center in the world outside Japan as the company also has a similar research center in Shanghai, China, said an official from Toray.
The company is aiming to be a leading membrane manufacturer by next year, especially in the reverse osmosis membrane market for seawater desalination and reclamation of wastewater.
Singapore has been attracting foreign companies specializing in water treatment technologies due to its plan to be a global water technologies hub in recent years.
