In the public's first opportunity to discuss design plans for the long-awaited store, the Mill Valley zoning administrator on Wednesday approved a series of storefront renovations for the site at the former Albertsons, 731 E. Blithedale Ave. Whole Foods also has a store at 414 Miller Ave.
Renovations include adding new windows, paint, a brick facade and large roll-up doors that officials for the national grocery chain said would give the store a more indoor/outdoor "farmers market" feel.
"This clears the way for Whole Foods to begin working with (Mill Valley's) building department on all construction documents," said Danielle Staude, senior planner with Mill Valley. "It's a small thing, but the situation with the doors played a role in the whole design of the store. They needed to know what the front of the store would look like in order to set the whole design."
City staffers have been reviewing interior plans for the 23,200-square-foot anchor space at the Alto Shopping Center, vacated by Albertsons more than two years ago.
Staude said Whole Foods officials estimated a six-month construction project could begin in August depending on the building permit process.
A handful of public comments at Wednesday's meeting, essentially a public hearing run by the city's planning director, ranged from some neighbors asking about store operations to nearby merchants and shoppers seeking
an opening date for the store, Staude said.
The grocer has targeted a store opening in early 2010.
During the past year, community members and neighboring merchants had expressed concern over the store's long-delayed arrival as the site remained untouched, city paperwork had yet to be filed and the grocer reported sluggish sales.
Another new Whole Foods Market is set to open in Novato by summer 2010.
