With the OR being outfitted and ready to go, the Sailors of health services will be able to provide total care to crew members for the first time in over four years since Refueling Complex Overhaul (RCOH) started.
"It really makes doing my job fulfilling being able to get this facility in tip-top shape," said Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Sajata Taylor, Health Services surgical technologist. "I'll be able to assist the surgeon in getting my shipmates the procedures they need, instead of having to go all the way to Portsmouth or Langley."
Just before the aircraft carrier goes on her next fast cruise and then on to sea trials, she will be acquiring a new surgeon and surgical assistants to man the new facility.
"It should give the crew a great sense of assurance in case of traumatic injury while underway," explained Cdr. Christopher Lucas, Carl Vinson's senior medical officer.
Coupled with the new OR, "Gold Eagle" health services has also completed their ward to safely monitor the patients' post operation recovery, or if they need to be sick in quarters for a period of time after their surgery.
USS Carl Vinson is completing its scheduled RCOH at Northrop Grumman Newport News Shipyard. The RCOH is an extensive yard period that all Nimitz-class aircraft carriers go through near the mid-point of their 50-year life cycle.
During RCOH Carl Vinson's nuclear fuel has been replenished and the ship's services and infrastructure upgraded to make her the most state-of-the-art aircraft carrier in the fleet and ready for another 25 years or more of service.
