On June 9th, 2009 ConAgra's Slim Jim packaging plant in Garner, North Carolina was rocked by an explosion. The reason for the blast is still under investigation at the moment. The explosion took the lives of five workers and many others were left with serious injuries.
While physical injuries are easily apparent, many workers from the plant are left with haunting scenes that will stay etched in their memory forever. "Many of the symptoms workers who were present during the explosion are experiencing are very comparable to post-traumatic stress disorder," said attorney and Workers' Compensation Law Specialist Benjamin T. Cochran.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is better known to be associated with veterans of war, but it can apply to any situation that is traumatic to a person's life. Symptoms of PTSD include flashbacks, troublesome memories, recurring nightmares, trouble sleeping, an increased reaction to being startled and a phobia of returning to where the traumatic event took place.
Many of the victims of this tragic event have complained of trouble sleeping, recurring nightmares and suffering from a lack of concentration. One client said, "I haven't slept in three days. When I do dose off, I start having nightmares of the explosion."
"In depth and lengthy investigations will reveal the negligent parties responsible for this horrible event, but the focus for the victims today should be on recovering from their mental and physical injuries and restoring their lives," added Cochran.
