BOUCHERVILLE, QUEBEC, Jun 25, 2009 (Marketwire via COMTEX) -- RON | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- RONA (TSX:RON), the largest Canadian distributor and retailer of hardware, home renovation and gardening products, made it to 18th position among 50 Canadian companies in the 8th annual Corporate Knights Corporate Citizens ranking. Included in the ranking for the first time, RONA made it to the top 20 with a corporate responsibility score of 71.85, the second-highest in the retail sector, and highest in the home-improvement retail industry. Corporate Knights specifically acknowledged RONA's "embedded life cycle approach to product development".

The Corporate Knights Best 50 methodology for grading corporate citizenship - based on environment, social and governance indicators found in the public domain - has helped raise the rigour and professionalism of what it means to be a good corporate citizen. Corporate Knights defines it as a company that fulfills its part of the social contract, with innovating solutions to pressing social and environmental challenges of our time.

"The Best 50 Corporate Citizens are essential champions in our country's march toward sustainable prosperity, says Toby Heaps, Editor-in-Chief of Corporate Knights. "They do the best job keeping their end of the social contract, with innovating solutions for the problems that will determine whether our civilization succeeds or fails," he adds.

"At RONA, it was always clear that our commitment to sustainable development called for rigour and transparency," said Robert Dutton, President and CEO, RONA. "We selected the life cycle approach as the base for all our environmental initiatives, as it helps ensure we do not simply shift environmental impacts from one phase of the life cycle to another, enabling us to make decisions based on scientific consensus and helping us avoid greenwashing. As Canada's leading home improvement retailer, we believe we have both the ability and the responsibility to make a positive difference in our society and so become the industry leader for sustainable development."
