More than 200 people lined up at Softbank Mobile's outlet in Omotesando in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward as it began selling the new iPhone, which has improved capability in shooting and editing video, at 7 a.m., earlier than usual.
An event was held at the outlet with Softbank Mobile President Masayoshi Son and actress Aya Ueto attending. Son said iPhone sales are on the increase and hoped for more sales with the introduction of the upgraded version.
After buying the new model, 22-year-old Taisuke Fujimoto said, "I want to soon shoot video and upload on the Internet." He had waited in line from 10 a.m. Thursday.
In a bid to boost sales of the smartphone, Softbank Mobile, a phone unit of Softbank Corp., has already launched a price-cutting campaign that runs through the end of September.
Under a 24-month installment plan of the sales promotion campaign, excluding telephone and Internet charges, new subscribers pay 480 yen a month, or total 11,520 yen, for the 16 gigabyte model and 960 yen a month, or total 23,040 yen, for the 32 GB model.
It was released in the United States and other countries last Friday and more than 1 million units have been sold in three days.
