Waste Management is suggesting Toronto residents use an alternative waste disposal solution during the garbage strike: the Rhinobag(TM). The Rhinobag is an ultra strong bag that can be filled with waste, which is hauled away by Waste Management when full.
Although intended for heavy items such as garden waste, renovation waste and miscellaneous junk, the Rhinobag can also be used as a temporary solution to get rid of household garbage. Together, neighbours can purchase and fill a Rhinobag with their trash. For example, with 15 neighbours participating, each can contribute approximately two large bags of garbage or more.
"Rhinobag is an excellent way to help keep communities clean, with minimal effort on the part of residents," says Randy Uens, senior manager of the Rhinobag service line. "To prevent illegal dumping, neighborhood communities can encourage residents to share a Rhinobag and have their trash disposed of in a safe, convenient manner. By jointly purchasing and filling a Rhinobag, neighbours can minimize costs and avoid the time and frustration of hauling their own trash."
The Rhinobag is not only a convenient method of trash disposal, it's also a responsible one. Uens explains, "All waste picked up by Waste Management goes to one of our privately owned and operated transfer stations in the GTA. The Ministry of the Environment regulates the transfer stations, and all waste is handled and inspected by experienced operators. As well, Rhinobag users must fill out a disclosure form to confirm their adherence to all local disposal restrictions and laws."
Adds Uens, "Handling waste requires training, skill and the proper facilities. Residents should be cautious of unlicensed trash collectors who cannot prove that the waste is being safely handled and properly disposed of, as this could pose significant environmental concerns. With Waste Management's Rhinobag, you know your trash is being taken care of by a reputable, regulated business."
