XM Canada (TSX:XSR), the country's leading satellite radio company, continues to support Canadian talent with the second annual The Verge Music Awards. The awards will once again present $25,000 to winners of Album of the Year and $25,000 to Artist of the Year, as voted by fellow Canadians.
"The Verge Music Awards are about celebrating and helping elevate the careers of Canadian bands," said Jeff Leake, Director of Music Programming at XM Canada. "What's unique about our awards is that the fans are the ones that choose the winners - it's for Canadians, by Canadians."
Online voting will begin on Canada Day and will be open until August 31st. Canadians can log on to www.thevergeonline.com/vma and vote for their favourite artists and albums. After two months of voting, the top nominations will be announced.
Last year's award for Artist of the Year went to Winnipeg band The Weakerthans. "It was a great privilege to receive the acknowledgement from the 2008 XM The Verge Music Awards," says Stephen Carroll, lead guitarist for The Weakerthans. "The Verge Music Awards does a great service to the Canadian music scene as it gives all nominated artists much needed exposure and support. We would like to thank XM Canada for supporting Canadian music. XM Canada is where the music we make is heard."
"Winning The Verge Music Award's Album of the Year for Into Your Lungs was a total surprise and honour; and the money has helped bring our songs to a larger and farther flung audience," says Tim Baker, vocalist, guitarist and pianist for St. John's band Hey Rosetta! "To win the votes from peers and public was a cool pat on the back, and to receive it from XM Canada's The Verge was even better. The fact that it can be so big, far-reaching and well-funded on the one hand, while still remaining grassroots and all about the music on the other is inspiring."
XM Canada's The Verge, channel 87 and namesake of the award show, broadcasts new, emerging and independent Canadian talent and is a major support system for Canada's "indie" music scene. XM Canada and The Verge are dedicated to providing Canadian musicians with a platform to expose their music to a growing national audience.
This year's The Verge Music Awards will be held at the ultra-cool The Mod Club, on September 22nd, 2009 and will be broadcast live-to-air to music fans across Canada.
Following on the heels of last year's successful show, this year The Verge Music Awards is coming back bigger. With two prestigious awards to hand out and three Canadian artists to perform live on stage, this will be a night dedicated to Canadian talent. For all the patriotic Canadians out there, now is the chance to go online and vote.
