The group of pharmacist-owners affiliated with PROXIM and PROXIMed announced today that beginning September 17, its pharmacies across Quebec will encourage their customers to opt for reusable bags in order to reduce the use of plastic bags at source. The nominal amount of five cents will be charged for every plastic bag given to a customer. This money will be donated to the Quebec Environment Foundation. "This initiative by PROXIM is a concrete gesture aimed at changing behaviours in order to preserve our environment and our health in a spirit of sustainable development," said Claude Hill, vice-president and director of the Quebec Environment Foundation.
Line Beauchamp, Quebec's Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and Parks applauded this initiative, which is in line with the voluntary code of best practices for the use of shopping bags: "There's no doubt this is a great way to reduce the use of plastic bags. We encourage leaders in all sectors across the province to undertake similar projects to improve health and the environment."
The pharmacist-owners affiliated with PROXIM are joining leaders in the grocery and hardware sectors that recently adopted this Québec province-wide trend. "We're proud to be the first group of pharmacist-owners to adopt a policy to reduce plastic bag use. It's a move that respects the environment and is consistent with the philosophy we adopted several years ago in matters of sustainable development and environmental protection," said Michel Chartrand, president of PROXIM. "Let's hope the other chains adopt similar practices," he added.
Here are a few of PROXIM's green initiatives since 2006: The Go Green With Us initiative (a seal created by PROXIM to help customers identify products that are biodegradable, chlorine-free, in recyclable packaging, not tested on animals, etc.), the recycling of medication program and the launch of the Nu NATURE biodegradable bodycare line.
PROXIM is a group of independent pharmacist-owners that focuses on professional practice. PROXIM provides a range of flexible services suited to the changing realities of the market, so that each member pharmacy can achieve excellence in its community. PROXIM is a network of close to 270 independent pharmacist-owners located in Quebec, Ontario and the Maritimes.
