The Temecula location could be Apple's first in Riverside County. The closest Apple stores are in Carlsbad, Escondido and Rancho Cucamonga.
The company applied for a city permit in June, said Deputy City Manager Aaron Adams. One city official indicated the store was looking to open at the mall. An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment.
Several retailers and restaurant chains have opened their first Southwest Riverside County locations at The Promenade since March, when the shopping center opened a $100 million, 126,000-square-foot "lifestyle center." Those include the Yard House bar and restaurant and P.F. Chang's China Bistro.
Apple was founded in the mid-1970s as a computer and software maker but has branched more recently into digital entertainment and sophisticated cell phones.
Apple has opened 250 of the stores since 2001, including 45 in California and 160 elsewhere in the United States. Retail was Apple's fastest-growing segment in 2008, with $6.3 billion in sales representing growth of 53 percent from 2007. That total represented more than $70,000 per store per day.
The stores allow users to try out Mac computers, iPod music players and other Apple products. Most stores also offer face-to-face technical support and scheduled workshops on using the products. Most of the services are free.
