The Japanese LCD panel maker insists that the Nanjing government buy its 6G LCD panel production line and move it to the city provided that an 8G plant is set up there, according to one source, describing the conditions as "harsh".
Located in Kameyama, Japan, the 6G production line produces small- and medium-sized LCD panels, products that are outdated nowadays as big-sized screens are winning increasing favor in the LCD market.
Mikio Katayama, president and chief executive officer for the Japan-based company, earlier arrived in Nanjing for the talks, shortly after the local government sent an investigation team to Japan, said the source.
The president did go to Nanjing several days earlier, confirmed an executive for Sharp Electronics Sales (China) Co., Ltd., declining to give details.
Notably, Sharp emphasized its determination to expand cooperation with Jiangsu Province when its president was on a visit to Nanjing, said another source quoting previous reports.
The Jiangsu government is eager to cooperate with the LCD panel maker this time, hoping to push the growth of its gross domestic product (GDP), added the source.
The city is likely to accept the harsh conditions from Sharp for an introduction of an 8G line, although the 6G line may cost CNY 10 billion or so, said the source.
It will take at least CNY 30 billion to set up an 8G line in the city, taking various factors into consideration. The municipal government of Nanjing is possible to act as a main investor in the line while Sharp will take an ownership as a technical patent holder, predicted the source.
Sharp's negotiation with the Nanjing government on the 6G line disposal came after its talks with several companies ended up with disagreement, according to people in the know.
Before turning to Nanjing, the Japanese company had entered into talks with SVA (Group) Co., Ltd., IRICO Group Electronics Company Limited, and the municipal government of Shenzhen, a person said.
The company will see an 8G LCD panel production line complement its LCD TV production in Nanjing if its plan makes a success, said market observers. Sharp set up a LCD TV production base in the eastern city as early as 1996.
